Zai Jie was an Immortal who was part of an effort by a cadre of Immortals to find the location of the mysterious Source. In the post-apocalyptic world of the movie, he came to believe he found it in Eastern Europe. He collected a sample of sand from the nexus of where the Source might be. Just has he did The Guardian arrived and began chasing him. He returned to main land Europe and broke into a data tower from which he could make contact with Methos, Reggie Weller, and Cardinal Giovanni.
He told them what he had found, but he was followed by The Guardian to the top of the tower where they duelled. Zai was unable to take the Guardian's head due to a protective metal collar.
He was then beheaded as the duel concluded with the Guardian absorbing his Quickening taunting and mockingly stated "THERE CAN BE ONLY ME!" The Quickening also destroyed the tower and caused the Guardian's metal collar to disappear, allowing him to be beheaded by other immortals.

Jie's weapon was a Chinese Dadao broadsword.
