In 1943, during World War II, Connor MacLeod fought in France, serving in a unit under Sgt.W. W. Hicks. Both men were also friends with Captain Dale Stark, their unit chaplain. When the unit was hit by an enemy mortar attack, Stark and MacLeod were killed. Hicks witnessed Connor's revival but said nothing.
