Samantha August, born Sammi Jo Smith was an Immortal, born c. 1952. She appeared in the novel Highlander: Measure of a Man.

History[]

Her adoptive mother lived in a trailer park and neglected her, bringing home a succession of men, some of whom raped Sammi Jo. In 1968, she fled town with her boyfriend Dale, who then abandoned her in San Francisco. She was found by Niccolo Machiavelli, who made her one of his "Beauties", the Immortals he surrounded himself with but taught little about the Game, instead, using them as disposable pawns. She became his "queen" and lover. He eventually triggered her immortality by causing her to die of a drug overdose.

Thirty years later, she was using the name Samantha, although Machiavelli would always call her Sammi Jo. Immortal Umeko Takahashi helped her see how Machiavelli was using her and the others, and trained her in secret, giving her a sword. When Machiavelli found out, he killed Umeko. Samantha was inducted into a conspiracy against Machiavelli by renegade Watcher, Mari Iwasawa, and Machiavelli's mortal lieutenant Satoshi Miyamoto, and they made plans to trick Duncan MacLeod, the only man who had ever challenged Machiavelli and walked away, into confronting him.

Samantha believed Satoshi and Mari had died after Machiavelli fed them poisonous blow fish, which had killed Samantha, but from which she revived. She was sent by Machiavelli to Washington to meet corrupt NSA agent, Alan Woodrow, who was key to his plan to control the computer network. There, she encountered Duncan and followed him home, pretending she was hiding from an abusive Immortal lover. Duncan suspected she was involved with Machiavelli, but trained her, introducing her to Joe Dawson.

However, the conspiracy had been orchestrated by Machiavelli from the start, with both Mari and Satoshi working for him, and the other conspirators were killed. Samantha was captured by Machiavelli's lieutenant, Ruffio Mocenigo, and taken back to his compound near Tokyo, seeing Satoshi, Woodrow, Yakuza leader, Ken Iwasawa, and even Mari killed when their usefulness was over. Machiavelli left Ruffio to torture her and to kill her if he didn't return from a confrontation with MacLeod.

She convinced him to untie her, then attacked him. Duncan arrived and threw Samantha his sword, allowing her to behead Ruffio and receive her first Quickening. Duncan beheaded Machiavelli soon after and they departed the compound together.
