Rebecca Lord is a mortal woman, she became the lover and student of the immortal Walter Reinhardt, who trained her in the use of a sword.
MacLeod had fought Reinhardt once, he fell into a river without losing his head, but left his sword behind, a 17th century German sabre. Mac appropriated the sword and included in his inventory at the antique shop.
When Rebecca spotted it, she knew the blade was Reinhardt's and set out to challenge and kill MacLeod, as she assumed he had done with Reinhardt.
She had been used and set up by Walter, he primed her and aimed her at his enemy, and let events play out. He allowed her to think that MacLeod murdered him. She refused in the end to execute his programming when he was later revealed to be alive and that he had never loved her, but simply used her.
