Mara Leonin was a mortal and a Balkan revolutionary.

Biography[]

Mara was once a reporter in the capital until artillery leveled her building and killed the publisher. The freedom fighters were led by Paul Karros, a charismatic leader. Karros was an Immortal who once served as a slave in Rome and fought in the slave revolt with Spartacus.

In late 1994, Mara was Karros' assistant and they traveled to the U.S. to drum up support for their cause. Duncan MacLeod and Karros fought together in the Mexican Revolution and Karros tried to convince MacLeod to fight with him in this cause. MacLeod turned him down, but his good friend, Charlie DeSalvo, was tempted both by the cause and by Mara herself.

When Father Stefan, a local liaison, was critically wounded in an assassination attempt, MacLeod realized that Karros was determined to fight the war at any cost - even at the cost of sabotaging peace negotiations by killing those who trusted him. When he exposed the truth to Mara, she discovered the shooter was one of their own, so she threatened to expose Karros for his actions and killing the soldier to cover it up. He responded by attempting to kill her and MacLeod was forced to challenge and behead his old comrade.

Afterward, Charlie decided to travel with Mara to her homeland to help her in her quest to rebuild.

Charlie and Mara in the Balkans

The following year, Mara and Charlie were set up by Immortal arms dealer Andrew Cord, who deliberately sold their insurgent group defective weapons. When Mara discovered this and threatened to expose him, Cord shot and murdered her. Her death prompted Charlie to seek revenge, which brought him back into MacLeod's life.
