Justina Castillo is the younger of two siblings, her father and mother being Rodrigo and Jhoanna Castillo. Adopted shorty after entering the United States, she quickly displayed a natural concern for the well-being of others. Encouraged and supported into the medical field, she would find her calling as a registered nurse as a Washington hospital. As her father succumbed to brain cancer, however, it became a bit of a curse to her. With all her studies, all her degrees, she was absolutely powerless to prevent his death. This would make her question, among other things, the path she was on. If she were to spend her whole life as a doctor, and was unable to even save her own father's life, what could she hope to accomplish?
One afternoon, she was grieving her father's death at a local lake when she had a chance encounter with Malej Senna Cavaco, himself coping with the immediate effects of a Quickening pushing him -- in his mind -- perilously close to a Dark Quickening. She would care for him and in time, enter into a relationship with him.
Notes: While undeniably good-natured, her past before her adoption by Rodrigo Castillo remains as big as a question mark as what Malej's ultimate destiny will materialize as, Dark Quickening or not.
