Little is known of the early years of Rene Castel, other than that he served as a mercenary for the Hungarian Army during the Crusade of Varna, and that he met his first death in that campaign's final battle.

He continued to serve as a mercenary for several years before the ancient Immortal Grayson took a liking to Castel and intorduced him to the rules of The Game. Under Grayson, Castel learned a deep contempt for mortal life, along with an impeccable work ethic. After many years at Grayson's side, Castel struck out on his own, establishing himself as a highly skilled assassin for hire, taking on several apprentices, most notably Ian Campbell, who betrayed him to bounty hunters in 1867.

Since that time, Castel has worked exclusively alone, but has, through a variety of identities, maintained his standing as one of the world's deadliest killers. Though he has taken many heads, Castel rarely seeks out confrontation with other immortals, and displays little interest in the Game and the Prize, preferring to focus his energies on his work and lavish lifestyle.
