Why is Kell called Kell?

If Jacob Kell is Connor's clansman, then he's also from the clan of MacLeod. Why then is his name Kell and not MacLeod?

Well, there's always the maternal side where someone not of the name marries in, but in this case it's probably because he's another foundling of no family. Worse, the name Kell might be Irish, derived from the monastary of the name, but it's probably Estonian. The original script had him named Kase, but they ultimately decided that was too close to the last antagonist, Kane. They really do seem to have a K fetish. Plus since it's never really explained, it's barely peripheral if at all true.

I think it might be a sort of a joke. I don't have the background to explain all of this, but went into semi-hysterical giggles when I read about McLeod Syndrome, "The McLeod blood group phenotype is an X-linked anomaly of the Kell blood group system." And "Because of the susceptibility to alloimmunization, it is important to diagnose affected patients because if they are transfused, they can develop antibodies compatible only with McLeod red cells." I know, I know. It's McLeod, not MacLeod. I don't know if this is what someone thought of when they named him Kell, I mean, they might just have been thinking of The Book of Kells, but that seems a bit much.

He probably was raised by another family and was just taken in by Father Rainey. But a villain named Jacob MacLeod would've been cool.
